Jeff Beatty Kicks Off Run Against Kerry

Republican challenger Jeff Beatty took aim today at US Senator John F. Kerry, chiding him as an "elitist" who is "worried about becoming the secretary of state instead of worrying about the secretaries in our state."

The attack came less than 24 hours after Kerry shook off a primary challenge from Gloucester Lawyer Edward O'Reilly. Beatty, a counter-terrorism consultant and former CIA agent, reached out to the 31 percent of Democratic primary voters who cast ballots for O'Reilly.

"There's a significant number of people, even among the Democratic base, that hard-working base that John Kerry has abandoned in favor of illegal aliens, who are ready to make a change," Beatty said at a lightly attended news conference in front of Financial District office tower that includes offices of the troubled mortgage giant Fannie Mae.

Borrowing a line of attack used by Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama, Beatty said voters had had "enough" of the 24-year incumbent.

"We've had enough of a senator who puts special interests ahead of the public interest," Beatty said. "We've had enough of a senator who will go on a five-week paid vacation when citizens in Massachusetts are filling their oil tanks paying nearly twice what they paid last year."

Kerry's re-election campaign dismissed Beatty's attempts to present himself as an ally of blue-collar voters.

"John Kerry has a proven track record of fighting for the interests of everyone in Massachusetts -- secretaries, fishermen, firemen, school teachers -- you name it," spokeswoman Brigid O'Rourke said in an e-mail. "And he’s going to continue fighting for issues that are important to our state for the next six years."

"Beatty entered the Army as an infantry officer in 1974. He served in Panama, then attended flight school, and later petitioned to join the Delta Force. His cousin had been shot down in Vietnam and Beatty had dreamed of being part of a rescue mission.

He got his chance when American medical students became trapped during a 1983 palace coup on the Caribbean island of Grenada. Beatty was among the thousands of US troops sent to restore order. His helicopter was shot down. He was one of 16 wounded, but still managed to help complete the mission of rescuing the students.

Beatty left the Army to join the FBI, when he worked with a hostage rescue team during the Los Angeles Olympics. From there, Beatty joined the CIA to help run counterterrorism in Europe and the Middle East until 1992."

"'We will make the case that we want them to support Beatty’s campaign,' Torkildsen said. 'You’re always running as an underdog as a Republican in Massachusetts, but John Kerry is very unpopular. He has high negatives.' "

Today, we congratulate Jeff Beatty on becoming the Republican nominee to challenge John Forbes Kerry for the U.S. Senate. We also thank Jim Ogonowski for running a brief, but spirited campaign. Jeff and Jim both spoke of need for change in Washington D.C., with that change beginning with the election of a new U.S. Senator to represent Massachusetts.

Breakfast With Beatty Postponed

Due to the snowstorm tomorrow, the Breakfast with Beatty has been postponed to March 15th.

Trainings

Yesterday was a busy Saturday. We were in Halifax for the Plymouth County GOP breakfast where roughly 50 people got together to rebuild the County Club. Thanks to Bernie Pigeon for doing a great job reviving the club and putting together this breakfast.

In attendance were: State Representatives Vinny deMacedo, Dan Webster, Susan Gifford and Sheriff Joseph McDonald as well as Jeff Beatty and Jim Ogonowski who are both strongly considering a bid for U.S. Senate.

Lyndsay Jones from our finance department talked about raising money and the process that goes into it. Our next official training will be our Finance School which is an intensive training devoted entirely to raising money. This is not just for candidates. If you are a campaign manager, activist, or part of a Republican Town Committee, we strongly encourage you to attend this training.

We are also going to be opening up a Training Office at the MassGOP headquarters in Boston for small groups that would like to come in on a Saturday or on a week night. This is perfect for Town Committees and campaigns that would like to schedule a private training and carpool together.

We had over 25 people this past week in our Boston office and I realized that we should conduct more trainings from our Boston office (don't worry, we are still on the road.)

The Berkshire County GOP also has an office in Pittsfield and we would be happy to run trainings out of this "satellite" office.

Things are moving in the right direction.

College Republicans

The State House News Service reports that the College Republicans were out in front of the State House along with Jeff Beatty to protest Deval Patrick's attempt to jump over the legislature to give in-state tuition to illegal immigrants.

"YOUNG REPUBS PROTEST PATRICK'S ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION POLICIESUS Senate candidate Jeff Beatty, challenging Sen. John Kerry, joined a group of young Republicans Tuesday as they ripped Gov. Deval Patrick's hopes to extend residential tuition rates to illegal immigrants. In the sub-freezing temperatures outside the State House this morning, the group held signs and distributed literature. Patrick has said his administration is exploring how to effect the policy shift without legislation. Massachusetts College Republicans chanted "Deval is out of Touch" and held signs that read "Don't DEVALue our citizenship." "It's going to break the bank," MACR chairman Brian Gwozdz said of in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. "It's obviously a radical proposal." Gwozdz said the college Repbulicans were worried that tuition and taxes would rise if illegal immigrants had in-state tuition."
